Frequently Asked Questions About Foot & Ankle Care
What is a podiatrist?
A podiatrist is a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions of the foot, ankle, and lower leg. Podiatrists treat everything from ingrown toenails and heel pain to fractures, deformities, and foot and ankle surgery.
Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist?
Many insurance plans allow you to see a podiatrist without a referral, but some HMO plans require one. Our team can help you check your plan’s requirements when you call (954) 942-5005 - Pembroke Pines Office or (954) 942-5005 - Plantation Office to schedule.
Where are your offices located?
We have two locations: our Pembroke Pines office at 601 North Flamingo Road, Suite #208, Pembroke Pines, FL 33028, and our Plantation office at 201 NW 82nd Ave, Suite 301, Plantation, FL 33324.
What are your office hours?
Our Pembroke Pines office is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. Our Plantation office is open Wednesday from 9am to 1pm.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring your photo ID, insurance card, a list of current medications, any prior imaging or records related to your foot or ankle problem, and the shoes you wear most often. You can save time by completing your paperwork ahead of time on our online forms page.
Do you offer patient forms in Spanish?
Yes. Our new patient packets are available in both English and Spanish on our online forms page, including packets for Medicare, auto injury, letter of protection, and workers’ compensation patients.
Do you treat auto accident and workers’ compensation injuries?
Yes. We evaluate and treat foot and ankle injuries related to auto accidents and workplace incidents, and we offer dedicated new patient packets for auto, LOP, and workers’ compensation cases.
When should I see a podiatrist for foot pain?
You should schedule a visit if pain lasts more than a few days, keeps you from walking normally, comes with swelling or numbness, or returns repeatedly. Early care for foot pain often prevents a minor problem from becoming a chronic one.
What causes heel pain?
The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the band of tissue along the bottom of the foot. Heel spurs, Achilles tendonitis, stress fractures, and nerve irritation can also cause heel pain.
Do bunions always require surgery?
No. Many bunions are managed with wider shoes, padding, custom orthotics, and anti-inflammatory care. When pain persists, procedures like Lapiplasty can correct the bunion at its root.
What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves to stimulate healing in stubborn soft-tissue problems like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis. Sessions are short and usually require no downtime.
How can I get rid of toenail fungus?
Toenail fungus is treated with topical or oral medications, careful nail debridement, and advanced options like ToeFX Light Therapy. Because nails grow slowly, treatment takes consistency and patience.
Why is foot care so important for people with diabetes?
Diabetes can reduce circulation and sensation in the feet, so small cuts or blisters can turn into serious ulcers or infections. Regular diabetic foot care exams help catch problems early.
How do I know if my ankle sprain is serious?
Significant swelling, bruising, inability to bear weight, or an ankle that keeps giving way are signs to get evaluated. Untreated ankle sprains can lead to chronic ankle instability.
Are custom orthotics better than store-bought insoles?
Custom orthotics are made from a precise mold of your feet to correct your specific alignment, while store-bought insoles offer only generic cushioning. Custom devices are often recommended for flat feet, heel pain, and recurring injuries.
Do you treat children and seniors?
Yes. We care for patients of all ages, from young athletes with sports injuries to older adults who benefit from geriatric foot care.
Can I treat an ingrown toenail at home?
Mild ingrown toenails may improve with warm soaks and proper footwear, but you should avoid cutting into the nail yourself. If there is redness, drainage, or recurring pain, a podiatrist can safely remove the offending nail border.
How do I schedule an appointment?
You can call (954) 942-5005 - Pembroke Pines Office or (954) 942-5005 - Plantation Office or use our online appointment request. Our team will confirm a time at whichever office is most convenient for you.
